Pathways for Children & Youth

Intensive Behavioural Intervention (IBI)

The regional IBI program is a longer-term, more intensive intervention, aimed at children 2 years of age to under 5 years of age with a diagnosis of ASD at the severe end of the spectrum. These children often present with significant deficits in communication, socialization, and behavioural regulation. The program's primary goal is to prepare the child for full-time participation in educational and community activities.

The IBI program is an individualized, intensive program with participation of approximately 20 hours per week. Goals are selected based on each child's needs, from a number of curriculum areas.

In addition to the Direct Service Option (DSO), under which Pathways and its regional partners provide IBI services, the Direct Funding Option (DFO) allows for the allocation of funds to parents, who are then responsible for hiring private service providers. The DFO model is suited to parents who are able to take an active role in the management of their child's IBI progam. Within the DFO model, parents are responsible for record keeping, sending paperwork to the regional service provider, and monitoring treatment and progress.
