Pathways for Children & Youth

ITTM (Intergenerational Trauma Treatment Model)

ITTM is a program that provides treatment for children, youth, and their caregivers who have experienced a traumatic event. ITTM has three phases:

Phase A
During Phase A, caregivers and youth over age 12 participate in a six session group where they learn more about trauma, how it may impact child and family functioning, and what to do to minimize its impact and create an environment for healing. NOTE: this portion of the Model is offered in English only.

Phase B
The caregiver who will support the child through the next stage of treatment meets with a therapist for 7-10 sessions to learn more about their own response to trauma, and how to correct any impact that past traumatic events may have on their current behaviours, beliefs, and parenting approach. NOTE: this portion of the Model may be offered by a French-speaking counsellor.

Phase C
The child's assessment and treatment phase occurs over 7-10 sessions. The sessions are therapist led, but with the caregiver as direct support and participant. Children learn to understand how trauma has affected them, and to correct any faulty beliefs that a child may harbor, so that they can grow up mentally healthy and well. NOTE: this portion of the Model may be offered by a french-speaking counsellor.
